Southeastern Trains U-Turn Welcomed by Gareth Johnson
Last month Gareth Johnson MP held a public meeting in Longfield for commuters who opposed Southeastern’s plans to cut the number of off peak services stopping at Longfield and Meopham Stations. The meeting was attended by about eighty local people and Mike Gibson from Southeastern.
Southeastern launched a consultation exercise which has just concluded with the result that Southeastern are not now asking the Department for Transport to alter the train services that stop at Longfield and Meopham Stations. The proposals would have shortened the journey time from the east of the County by four minutes but cut the number of services stopping during off peak periods at Longfield and Meopham from three to two.
The meeting was attended by about eighty local residents, Gareth Johnson MP for Dartford, Adam Holloway MP for Gravesham, Jeremy Kite, Leader of Dartford Council and Mike Snelling former Leader of Gravesham Council.
Gareth commented:
“ I am absolutely delighted that we have convinced Southeastern Trains to drop this proposal. Reducing the number of trains using Longfield Station would have had a serious impact on the local area. As someone who commutes in to London from Longfield, I know that local commuters were very angry about this proposal. This is a case of people power winning the day”.
Jeremy Kite said:
“This is a case of common sense prevailing and I congratulate the two MPs on their highly successful campaign”.
