FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Gareth Johnson MP welcomes extension of smart cards to Kent’s stations
On Thursday (8th March) Transport Secretary Justine Greening MP announced in Parliament that “We will expand smart ticketing to give more passengers the kinds of benefits that travellers in the capital already enjoy with Oyster cards.”

Gareth Johnson MP for Dartford said “It is fantastic news that the smart card systems could be extended and as a commuter myself I know that any system that can save time for commuters in the morning will be welcomed by all.  This technology should be utilised to its full potential and to benefit as many commuters as possible.”

In the statement Justine Greening also announced that £18 billion will be invested in modernising the railways during this spending period.

Gareth said “I am extremely pleased at this announcement.  Whilst I do not support the plans by Transport for London to take over running trains in Kent, I am certainly in favour of the extension of a smart card system. The ideal situation for Dartford is for an Oyster Card system to cover Dartford without the Mayor of London controlling our stations. This announcement means we are one step closer to achieving this.”
