FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Gareth Johnson MP supports extension of crime mapping facility

The Home Secretary Theresa May MP has today announced that the Government’s crime mapping facility will be extended to show crime’s which happen near a range of public places not just near people’s homes.

Gareth Johnson MP for Dartford said “I welcome this announcement as I believe that the criminal justice system should be as transparent as possible.  If parents are allowing their children to go to a park or visit an area unaccompanied they should be able to see if the area is safe.”

“Whilst we should not be sensationalist about crime rates people are right to be concerned about their local area.  In October last year I raised the issue of reoffending rates in Dartford which revealed that in 2010 over 90% of those convicted of committing a crime were re-offending.” Said Gareth.

The website www.police.uk received more hits than any other Government website last year and by May this year will also include the action taken by Police when a crime is committed.

Gareth said “I hope that the information provided by this website can be used by the public to help prevent crime and encourage people to be vigilant against opportunist crimes such as car theft or burglary. It should also help to remove the fear of crime in locations where that fear is unjustified.”
