Gareth Johnson MP campaigns to reduce instances of closure of the Dartford Crossing during adverse weather conditions
“Too often the QEII bridge is closed leaving huge tail backs and delaying hundreds of people in traffic” said Gareth Johnson MP for Dartford. “Whilst safety should not be compromised there are often times when the bridge should be closed to high sided vehicles but not to cars” said Gareth. “ It can sometimes be right to close the Bridge, during high winds, to vans and lorries but still allow cars to use it. It is common sense that should prevail and not over-enthusiastic health and safety considerations”
On Wednesday 1st February Gareth Johnson received assurances from Mike Penning MP, Minister for Roads, that “The Highways Agency routinely reviews its operational procedures to ensure they remain appropriate. Following the recent closures of the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge I have asked the Highways Agency to look into whether total closure of the bridge is the only viable option, when the risk is limited to high-sided vehicles, or whether the bridge could in future remain open to cars only.”
Gareth said “I look forward to the findings of the Highways Agency on this issue and have requested that they keep me informed. They must do everything possible to reduce unnecessary congestion at the crossing and I will campaign on this issue for as long as it takes to secure a better deal for Dartford.”
