MIND Mentors needed

Date: Mon 25th July 2011

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Dartford, Gravesham and Swanley Mind, the local mental health charity which helps some of the most vulnerable in our society to cope with their problems. They are based in the old Almshouses at the bottom of West Hill.

According to the Mental Health Foundation 1 in 4 people in the UK suffer from mental health problems at some stage in their life. It is therefore important that Mind are able to continue with their valuable work.

They carry out excellent work in our community and one of their many services is a mentoring scheme, which recently received an approved provider award. They would like to attract additional mentors to work with them.  This is a challenging and rewarding role and may suit retired people who are considering volunteering.

A Mind mentor is matched with a person with a mental health issue, and works directly with them to help them achieve the personal goals that will help them recover. Mentors come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and need to be able to commit 2 hours per week to the person they are mentoring. Training is provided on a well-received 3-day course, and ongoing support is always available through the Mentoring Coordinator. Mentors have commented how rewarding the work is, especially knowing that with their help, people have been able to resume a fuller life in the community. People interested in being a mentor should contact: Neelam Nagra, Mentoring Coordinator, on 01322 291380.
