London Elections

Date: Tue 8th May 2012

Boris Johnson was last week crowned as the Mayor of London having defeated his long term adversary Ken Livingstone once again. As a Conservative, I was naturally delighted at this result and pleased that the Capital will never be run by Ken Livingstone again. This year will of course be an extremely important year for London. The Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will see more visitors to London than we have seen in a generation.

Whilst I am confident that Boris Johnson will continue to be a successful Mayor, I have no desire to see him spread his wings down to Dartford. I have always maintained that we should protect our Kentish identity that is separate from London. We must retain control of our railway stations and our part of the Thames. The Mayor of London must remain just that, the Mayor of London and not of North Kent as well.

Boris Johnson is a charismatic figure and popular with Londoners and many people living in Kent.  He has managed to help reduce the Capital’s murder rate by a quarter, slashed waste in City Hall and provided the hugely popular Boris bikes.  He has achieved a great deal in the last few years and I am sure that there will be many more successes to come.

Whilst the Mayor’s actions will inevitably impact upon us as we are a commuter town and therefore the London economy is hugely influential, we must retain our distinctions and ensure that Dartford never becomes another London suburb.
