St John’s Ambulance use of five-year-old dead child imagery is crossing a line of decency

Date: Wed 26th January 2011

Today, Gareth Johnson MP received a letter from St John’s Ambulance inviting him to meet senior personnel. Attached to the letter was an A4 picture of a five-year-old dead child called Abigail West.

“Sending a picture of a dead child through the post to me was distasteful in the extreme and arguably illegal.  It was very upsetting for my staff to open the letter.  I do not understand why they feel it is necessary to send a picture of a dead child through the post to encourage me to attend a reception.  They do not state on the literature that the ‘deceased’ child is played by an actress and in fact attempt to portray the image as real.

“Political lobbying should know that there is a line of decency that should not be crossed and I intend to raise this matter in the House of Commons tomorrow.

“St John’s Ambulance is a well-respected organisation and this has done it a disservice.”
