National Citizenship Programme

Date: Mon 9th January 2012

  For Immediate Release

Gareth Johnson MP supports the expansion of the National Citizenship Programme

Last summer in his weekly column in the Dartford Messenger Gareth Johnson MP for Dartford wrote about the benefits of the National Citizen Service scheme which was being piloted in Dartford.

This summer project for 16 year olds provided the opportunity to stay away from home for two weeks, taking part in a schedule of activities including outdoor challenges and tasks designed to promote life skills.  Following on from this there was a three to four week community element, where young people worked on community projects.

Gareth said “I am pleased that earlier this week the Government announced that the National Citizen Service will be extended to offer 30,000 places to young people in 2012, 60,000 in 2013, and 90,000 in 2014.”

“This program is an excellent opportunity for young people to improve their CV’s and gain valuable experience of volunteering in the local area.”  Said Gareth.

ENDS.
