Gareth Johnson MP : We must prevent reoffending

Date: Tue 18th October 2011

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Gareth Johnson MP “We must prevent reoffending”

On Monday Gareth Johnson MP for Dartford raised the question of repeat offenders in Parliament.  Gareth discovered that in 2010 alone nearly 90% of those in Dartford who were convicted of a crime were reoffending.  The same figure was also true for Kent as a whole.

Gareth said “These figures are truly shocking and reflect that the current Criminal Justice System simply isn’t working.  If all those who are committing crimes are going on to do so again we are failing to get our message across.  Crime doesn’t pay and we need to show this through tougher sentences and a more productive time in prison.”

Justice Minister Ken Clarke MP has recently pledged to reform the prison system providing work and training to prisoners to try and reduce re-offending.

Gareth said “ I hope that the current reforms we are seeing introduced will make significant inroads into this statistic as the taxpayer should not have to bear the cost of criminals who repeatedly offend. It is a classic case of the same people spoiling things for everyone else”
