Press Release                                                                                       For Immediate Release

Gareth Johnson MP to host public meeting about Dartford Crossing Consultation

On the 9th September Gareth Johnson will host a meeting to give residents the opportunity to share their views on the proposed changes to the tolls at the Dartford Crossing with the Highways Agency.  The Department for Transport have also been invited.

The consultation period ends on 23rd September 2011 and local residents can let their views known in a number of ways. Representations can be made through the Department of Transport’s web site or in writing to them.

Gareth said “I believe the Crossing should be free for all users. The people of Dartford were promised that the Crossing would be free once the bridge had been paid for. This happened in 2003. The tolls stifle commerce in the local area and act as another form of taxation on the motorist. The Department’s decision to prioritise tackling the congestion is to be welcomed but there must not be a repeat of what took place several years ago when the tolls were increased but nothing was done about the congestion”.

Gareth has published his full response to the consultation on his website at: www.garethjohnsonmp.co.uk.  Gareth said “I would encourage all local residents to take part in the Department of Transport’s consultation and to make their views known on the proposed changes.”  You can take part in the consultation by writing to the Department of Transport or by emailing your response.  Details of the consultation can be found at: http://www.dft.gov.uk/consultations/dft-2011-08.

The meeting Gareth is hosting on the 9th September will provide residents with the chance to discuss their views on the consultation directly with the Highways Agency.  It will begin at 5pm at the Mick Jagger Centre at Dartford Grammar School.
