Gareth Johnson MP opposes TfL bid to run rail services from Dartford
“I do not support the suggestion that TfL should take over running trains from Kentas I believe that providers must be accountable” said Gareth Johnson MP for Dartford.
“The Mayor of London is not accountable to residents in Dartford, they cannot vote for him and therefore decisions about the transport network in Kent should not be made by him. Residents should be able to express their dissatisfaction with a policy at the ballot box.”
The proposals suggest that North Kent lines from Dartford, Sevenoaks and all services passing through Bromley South which are currently run by Southeastern will fall under TfL control. The Southeastern franchise agreement will be up for renewal in 2014 which is when there would be an opportunity for TfL to take over.
”I am extremely concerned that these proposals may result in a more London centric approach to public transport for people from Dartford and as I pledged during my election campaign I will always fight to protect Dartford’s Kentish identity.” Said Gareth.
Gareth has continued to meet with representatives from Southeastern trains on a regular basis since being elected. Gareth said “Whilst residents may have concerns with the performance of Southeastern I still believe that in Kent we are better off having a rail provider that serves Kent as opposed to one that serves London. I believe that these changes would result in a slower service from Kent into London and would therefore provide less value for money for residents”
The Secretary of State has deferred making a decision on the issue until the summer, after the Mayoral election has passed. Despite this, the plan is still likely to feature in the election campaigns in the run-up to 2012 with all 3 candidates supporting the proposals. TfL are also expected to run a publicity campaign on the issue over the coming months.
