Olympic Trading Hours

Date: Mon 23rd April 2012

Next week the Government is introducing the Sunday Trading (London Olympic and Paralympic Games) Bill to Parliament which proposes to suspend temporarily the Sunday Trading laws in England and Wales from Sunday 22 July to Sunday 9 September only. Sunday Trading will not be extended beyond these dates.  This is an issue I will be fully supporting.

I do, of course, understand that many people have serious reservations about these proposals. This provision will not affect existing rights of shop workers so those who wish to opt out of Sunday working can still do so. However those who want to take advantage of the measure to earn more money by working will be able to.

The Olympics represent a once in a lifetime opportunity for the whole of the south east. Dartford’s economy relies very heavily on retail and so taking advantage of the opportunities that will come this summer is vital for the local area. Allowing both Bluewater and our high streets to trade unfettered during this time is essential if we are to take full advantage of the Olympics coming to London.

I want to see Sunday remain a special, family day but this temporary measure should benefit everyone.
