2012 has to go down as one of the most remarkable years for our Country. For the first time since 1948 we hosted the Olympic Games. At first, many of us sneered at the games fearing an over budget, chaotic repeat of the Millennium Dome fiasco. However, as the date for the commencement of the games drew closer people warmed to them. The opening ceremony seemed to encapsulate Britishness and by the end of the games we were a nation more confident in our own identity than we have been for many years.
The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations helped to confirm her position as being the most respected person in the world. We saw very clearly the deep affection that exists for the Queen not just here but right across the Commonwealth and the rest of the world. The news that Prince William and Kate are expecting a child in 2013 was also warmly welcomed.
Locally, we have had the announcement of a theme park to be built in the area with housing developments and other construction projects which will transform the way that the area will look in the coming years.
The only two elections in the area were a local Council By Election in Castle Ward and the Police Commissioner elections. The spoils for these were shared by the Conservative Party and an Independent.
This year will no doubt bring a mixture of challenges. The recession still continues to bite. I do feel however that there is an increased sense of pride and optimism that exists both locally and nationally. I very much hope this will not only remain but be enhanced throughout 2013.
