Bin Collections

Date: Thu 16th June 2011

As Dartford’s MP I want to see Dartford’s residents have the final say over local services. This though should not just apply at Local elections but throughout the year. One example of this is the new power for local residents to veto Council Tax rises. Whilst the local freeze in Council Tax should remove the necessity for this in Dartford, the principle that it is people who are in charge remains.
One other example of this was when local residents voted in a local referendum to keep weekly bin collections. The Local Council decided to ask people how often they wanted their rubbish collected. Dartford stated quite clearly that it wanted to continue with weekly bin collections to collect general and food waste and reject fortnightly collections. I am happy to say that Dartford residents were listened to by the Council and have weekly bin collections with fortnightly recycling collections.
There are also extra help with waste collection that some may find useful. If you are elderly, infirm or disabled, the Council may be able to help you with the collection of your refuse and recycling. Call them on: Refuse Tel: 01322 343290, Recycling Tel: 01322 343444, Refuse Email: [email protected], Recycling Email: [email protected]
Additionally, for larger items such as an old sofa, wheelbarrow or washing machine you can Freegle it – don’t throw it away – give it away. Freegle is a way of giving away unwanted items to someone nearby, as long as it is free and legal. Their aim is to keep anything reusable out of our landfill sites. Meeting new people helps to develop local community networks and friendships in the process. To contact them online: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DartfordFreegle/
